How long did Elanor remain a maid of honour to Arwen? I see that she became one in 1436 SR but I'm not seeing an end date. Has anyone seen one? Thanks!

I don't recall ever seeing an "end date", nor any description of what being a 'maid of honour' actually entailed.

'maid of honour' is much like a 'lady in waiting'--the job would be to keep the Queen company, and wait on her--not like a servant, but much the same as when Merry and Pippin were esquires to Eomer and Aragorn and waited on them at the feast in Cormallen. Serving the Queen that way is considered an honor. (except, of course, the fighting and guarding part, LOL)

Of course, mostly I think, it would be to keep Arwen company and be her friend.

My guess is that the *honour* is lifetime, but actually *serving* in that capacity would probably only be when she is in the Queen's presence--e.g. when the family goes to Gondor *or* when the Royals are in Annuminas, she'd perform her duties then. But like Merry's or Pippin's knighthood, she'd still be one of Arwen's ladies.

That, however, is simply a guess, based on RL historical precedence, and hobbity practicality.

It makes sense though ... I've got a fic I'm setting in 1445 SR. The whole maid of honor thing is not part of the plot, I'm just trying to make sure Elanor could have been in the Shire when I'm setting this. I think it should work, whether or not she's released from her duties either temporarily or permanently ...

thanks!

Well, there you go! I'm sure, however, that she'd have been in correspondence with the Queen, especially after her year there in 1442!

Ah, so she was with Arwen in 1442?

From the Tale of Years, Appendix B:

"1442 Master Samwise and his wife and Elanor ride to Gondor and stay there for a year. Master Tolman Cotton acts as Deputy Mayor"

Also, according to the "Longfather Tree of Master Samwise" in Appendix C, little Tolman Gamgee was born in 1442. The general fanon consensus is that he was born there.

It doesn't say if any of the other children besides Elanor went or not, nor whether Merry or Pippin accompanied Sam. Those are open to interpretation.

Ah! That was the year they went to Gondor. Well, hm, must think if I like 1445 then :-)

Yep, she visited Gondor w/ her parents in 1442, returned the Shire 1443 sometime; she married Fastred in 1451 at the age of 30, and they removed to the Westmarch in 1455 when Fastred is made the Warden. Where they lived between 1451-1455 is up to you, though it seems to me that they likely lived in Greenholm, as it seems to be the tradition for the wife to live with the husband's family. You could also make the case that they removed to Westmarch when it was opened to the Shire in 1452 but did not move to the Undertowers until 1455.
